The first-ever game that featured this well-loved character was supposed to follow a male protagonist who went on an adventure to explore Egyptian pyramids in search for hidden treasure. But developers felt like this would be too similar to Indiana Jones, so they decided to go with the female character instead. The Cruz to Croft shift happened because the same developers felt like the game would spark greater interest if they came up with a more U.K. friendly name. And after some phone book browsing, they finally settled on Lara Croft.
