Humanity has travelled a long way and so has our perception of the origin & evolution of the universe. Let’s trace our way back to prehistoric observations that paved the way for today’s modern calculations and understand the best-supported theories that explain the Origin of the Universe and the Solar System. This article will be a perfect look back at the origin and evolution of the universe solar system so stay tuned!

The Universe Came With A Big Bang!

  • The universe is what comprises our planet, other planets, stars, galaxies and all other forms of matter and energy that exist in the cosmic system. Its birth is presumed to be 13.8 billion years ago, the moment of the big bang.
  • The Big Bang Theory is believed to be the unequivocal proof of the formation of the universe.
  • The theory was born out of an observation that other galaxies are drifting away from our galaxy in all directions at a great speed as an aftermath of an ancient huge explosion.
  • The Big Bang got its name from Georges Lemaître, a Belgian priest in the 1920s. He announced the possibility that the universe came into being from a primordial single atom.
  • His theory was supported by various other theories like the speeding away of the galaxies and the discovery of cosmic microwave radiations.
  • There are various theories related to how the Big Bang occurred, one such theory is that earlier the universe was very compact and in such an incomprehensibly dense and energetic state all the fundamental forces merged into one large force and later on, the universe cooled down and all the four fundamental forces separated from one another. Thus, forming the universe’s fundamental particles.
  • Another perspective to understand the Big Bang was that the compactness of the universe led to the mixing, mingling, and settling of fine particles at the same temperature. Then, all that matter and energy expanded outward more or less evenly. This model came to be known as inflation.
  • With time the matter cooled, more particles came into being, and eventually condensed into the stars and galaxies of today’s universe.

The Birth Of The Solar System By Laplace & Modern Theory

The possibility of being able to discern the birth of the Solar System came only after Sir Issac Newton announced the laws of motion and gravity in 1687. Even after that, there were a lot of hurdles in the way of finding out the origin of the solar system.

Many theories were given after that but a significant one came only after 40 years when a French mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace in his book named Astronomy talked about the origin of the universe. Let’s understand the studies presented by him through these points –

  • He announced that the Sun and the planets were formed in a rotating nebula which eventually cooled and collapsed.
  • Later the nebula condensed into rings to become planets and the central mass – the Sun.
  • The theory also gave the approach that the slowly rotating core became the Sun and the planets formed from the faster-rotating cloud.

Then came a modern approach to the understanding of the origin of the solar system. Let’s understand the modern approach from the following points now –

  • The planets became dense disks of gas and dust clouds that collapsed and gave us the Sun.
  • The density of this disk could form the planets but was thin enough for the residual matter to be blown away by the Sun as its energy output increased.
  • Strong support to this theory came when Hubble Space Telescope obtained the first images of proto-planetary disks in the Orion nebula which were roughly on the same scale as the Solar System.

Many theories are given to explain the birth of the solar system but none of them is broadly developed to give a clear understanding of how our solar system came into being. By taking a little bit from all the theories we can come to the following conclusions and wait till any new finding comes and gives us a whole new perspective.

  • The Sun and the planets originated due to the shrinkage of gas and dust clouds under its gravitational pull.
  • The small total rotations of the clouds built a disk around the central condensation.
  • The central condensation became the Sun, and the small condensations in the disk formed the planets and their satellites.
  • Later the sun’s energy blew away the remaining gas and dust, birthing the solar system that we all witness today.
