Super Mario and Nine Inch Nails

Super Mario is one of the most well-loved games of all times. Generations both young and old find any of the Sper Mario titles quite enjoyable and entertaining. But did you know that a lot of Koopalings from the Super Mario games were actually named after famous musicians? For instance, Ludwig, Iggy and Lemmy are probably the most obvious ones. You’ve probably at least heard about the Fallout 3 game if not played it as well. In this post-apocalyptic game players can acquire a so-called Fat Man, a mini nuke launcher that was based off of a real nuke launcher called the M-388 Davy Crockett Tactical Nuclear Recoilless Rifle. Now every time a nuke is launched in the game, players can hear a satisfying “ding”. This sound was actually the exact sound the lunch bell from Bethesda Softworks’ cafeteria made.

Chances are you’ve probably never heard about Lara Cruz. But chances also are that you’re more than familiar with Lara Croft. Now, you may be wondering what these two ladies have in common and the answer is quite simple – they’re the same person. However, what’s even more surprising is that this heroine was actually initially male. The first-ever game that featured this well-loved character was supposed to follow a male protagonist who went on an adventure to explore Egyptian pyramids in search for hidden treasure. But developers felt like this would be too similar to Indiana Jones, so they decided to go with the female character instead. The Cruz to Croft shift happened because the same developers felt like the game would spark greater interest if they came up with a more U.K. friendly name. And after some phone book browsing, they finally settled on Lara Croft.

The first video game in space

Nowadays, when you say “video game” people instantly think of these elaborate titles the majority of which is usually enjoyed online. However, the first ever video game that was actually played in space was the Game Boy version of Tetris. Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr A. Serebrov was the first person to play this game in space in 1993. After its fun voyage, the game was actually sold at an auction for $1,220. Pretty cool, ha?

Left 4 Dead in The Cabin in the Woods

Any horror (or Chris Hemsworth) lover out there is probably already familiar with the movie The Cabin in the Woods. Love it or hate it, the movie is filled with easter eggs and hidden gems. Those who were watching it carefully enough actually got the chance to spot creatures from the video game Left 4 Dead among other monsters shown in the movie. If you skip to the monster wall scene in the movie, you can clearly see a Boomer and Witch mixed with all the other monsters.
